What is the one word that describes you? Warrior

The one word that describes me is warrior. Tomorrow I will celebrate a gift from my Irish sister, Lisa Moe. She donated blood and a kidney to me on March 19, 2009. I can’t believe it’s been 15 years. We are nurses, with the same 1st name (Lisa), initials, birthdays 7 days apart, worked together in a labor, and delivery unit with wonderful people. The kidney was a success for hours and I lost it due to hemorrhage. She gave her kidney and numerous blood exchanges so that I could be better. She always told me that she was going to make me Irish. Everyone at our work spoke about this beautiful selfless act. We even celebrated the day before with a pre-kidney celebration at Alma de Cuba.

We were an example of what shouldn’t have happened. Hospital Public Relations approached us about doing a story because it was a story of love. A love for one another and for all of the people involved. The hospital staff rallied for us as a family and not as coworkers. We learned a lot about what should have happened e.g. post-care of the recipient, psychological support, and continuation of care. I had a successful 3rd kidney transplant in 2019, but I will never forget how this event affected so many people around us. People knew our story. Moe always said to me, “Always tell our story.” I have kept that promise and will continue to for the rest of my life.

Retrospectively, there was still a gift and a feeling that I will never feel at another place of employment. We are family. I love you, Moe, and I’m forever grateful to you for your gifts of love and friendship.

Who is the most confident person you know?

The most confident person that I know is me. My confidence was developed over several years. I’ve had set back with my health- 2 failed kidney transplants, cancer, and several skin disorders. After experiencing this there are only 2 choices, depression or moving forward.

I chose to keep moving by pursuing my dreams and most importantly learning to say no and mean it. If there’s something that you don’t want to do, say no without making excuses. To me that exudes confidence.

Betrayal and Trust

A simple mistake is just that, but when someone close to you purposefully hurts you, it feels like a targeted strike at your weakest moment. I can never trust you again; all I can do is pray that you will be a better friend to someone else. Always trust your instincts about people.

If it’s a minor infraction with a friend or an associate, the apology should address the behavior. If the person doesn’t do that, they may repeat the same thing again. Ask them, what the are apologizing for if it’s not mentioned ? If they can’t answer that or beat around the bush, move forward in silence. Trust me♥︎

Finding Strength in Tragedy

In times of tragedy, I found solace in helping others and taking each day as it comes. The journey may be arduous, but I persevered, holding onto hope that tomorrow would bring a brighter day.

5th Anniversary of my 3rd Kidney Transplant

L. Myers MSN, RNC, CSN

Today marks the 5th Anniversary of my 3rd Kidney Transplant, reflecting the significance of dates in my life. My journey began with my 1st Kidney transplant on 02/05/2005, graciously donated by a 5-year-old. The 2nd transplant followed on 03/19/2009, a gift from living donor and friend Lisa Moe. Lastly, my 3rd transplant on 02/21/2019, a precious gift from a 24-year-old teacher named Vanessa.

I am immensely grateful for the unwavering support and blessings from God. A year ago, I started this Blog as a source of encouragement for those enduring challenging times, to inspire them to hold onto their faith in God and never lose hope.

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀

I’ve had several friends, associates, people in my life who I became close with. The saying is true, friendships are about seasons, reasons, and timing. You’ll know when it’s time to move on. It may become draining, uncomfortable, and exhausting to the point of dreading a conversation with the person. You have to love yourself, wish them well, and move on.

Does Everything Go Back to Normal After a Kidney Transplant?

The short answer is no. As a patient, whether you’re on dialysis or post-transplant, you assume new roles as your own advocate, pharmacist, organizer of appointments, and your labs. It’s your job to know about all aspects of your health. You may be seeing multiple specialists. It becomes a part or full-time job and allows you to detect abnormalities and notify your team.

Taking medications can have side effects, but it’s better to have them monitored by doctors than needing dialysis. After my third transplant four years ago, I experienced Type II diabetes, Covid with pneumonia, hair loss, and an autoimmune skin disorder. Patient portals are incredibly useful for managing your health and medical care.

A woman’s hair is her crown, and promises of growth are a billion-dollar business. I have spent a lot of money chasing the dream of maintaining my tresses. However, I started losing my hair, and it became noticeable to others. With every click and like on various media outlets, an overwhelming amount of targeted ads flooded my feeds. My likes ranged from vitamins for hair growth to hair products, wigs, and weaves. After considering all the options, I decided to go for a haircut. What a relief!❤️
